Currency and Banking The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee (Rs1). There are 100 cents in a Rupee. Rupee note denominations are: Rs100, Rs50, Rs25, Rs10 Rupee coin denominations are Rs5, Rs1 and 50 cents. Exchange rates can be obtained from your own bank, but currently the rate is Rs10 = £1.00 (UK pounds sterling).
Paying your way in Seychelles The majority of your spending at your hotel can be placed on your tab for settlement before departure by credit card. All tourism related establishments in Seychelles can only accept payment in foreign exchange( Pounds Sterling, Euros, US Dollar etc).
We recommend that should you want to take cash with you, Euros are the most acceptable, Credit cards (Visa, Barclaycards, Access, Amex) are widely accepted by most hotels, restaurants and related services such as car hire, excursions etc. Local currency can only be used for payment of incidental purchases, such as restaurants not attached to hotels, shopping, taxis etc.
Thus your need for local currency may not be great, and here we advise our clients to obtain relatively small amounts of Rupees as you go along, as changing back to your original currency can be expensive. Do please ensure that when you purchase local currency you obtain and retain the receipt. There are cash points at some banks on Mahé and Praslin where you will be able to obtain local currency. Please note that no cash point or bank will issue or provide you with foreign currency.
It is illegal to exchange money other than through banks or local hotel cashiers. We are often asked what to take in the way of currency. In our experience we recommend: take your credit cards, a few travellers cheques and Euros which should include low denomination bank notes.
