The Seychelles offers hundreds of miles of coral reefs and rocky outcrops for both snorkelling and scuba diving. The waters of the Indian Ocean are warm, safe and clear, providing an abundance of marine life thriving on the rich underwater flora and fauna. Strict marine conservation policies ensure that fish are plentiful and unafraid of spectators.
Snorkelling The majority of the Seychelles islands have an abundance of prime snorkelling sites to choose from, these will be dependant upon your swimming ability and local sea and weather conditions.
- First time snorkelling: We suggest that you gain confidence with your mask and snorkel at your local swimming pool prior to your holiday, this will save you both time and tribulations
- Snorkelling equipment: Many hotels have snorkelling equipment (masks, snorkel tube and flippers) and is offered complimentary for their guests to use.
However, if possible we recommend that you take your own equipment to guarantee a perfect fit. If you snorkel without flippers make sure you wear protective shoes/sandals. And finally, remember that your back is exposed to the sun when snorkelling, so if you are likely to burn, put a top on.
- Where & when to snorkel: There are hundreds of snorkelling sights in the Seychelles ranging from the small sandy coves around Mahé to the awesome reef walls off Desroches Island.
Seychelles Travel can advise on many, but on the day, the local conditions of the sea must be taken into account and to this end, we recommend that you talk to your hotel or our local representative, Mason’s Travel, who will advise you – have fun !!
Scuba diving For the experienced, dive sites in the Seychelles offer a wide variety of dives from shore to wall dives, both night and day, the most spectacular being off the islands of Alphonse, Desroches and Denis. There are many PADI dive centres scattered around the main islands, so, wherever you are staying a dive centre will not be far away.
Courses offered are the International Open Water Certificate (approx. 4 days) or the Advanced Open Water Certificate (2 days).
For the beginner there could be no better location than Seychelles to take the plunge. Most dive centres offer an introductory 1 day scuba course (free at some hotels) or the 4 day open water course, available for anyone over the age of 12 years.
